MARY BARNES

Mary Barnes was born is Ashland, Ohio, in 1911. After studying architecture in England, she began working for Tecton and was involved in the design of several of the firm’s radically modern buildings. Barnes returned to the United States in 1937 and worked as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, where in 1938 she organized the first museum exhibition and publication of the work of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

In the early 1960s, Mary Barnes began working in the office of Edward Larrabee Barnes. She was responsible for designing the interiors of many of the firm’s projects and worked closely with the design team.
